What is a relaxed Performance?

We offer performances that are more relaxed for all those who benefit from a show where loud noises are reduced, elements of surprise are kept to a minimum and moving around the auditorium is not a problem.

Relaxed performances are carefully created for people with learning disabilities and their families or carers so that everyone can enjoy the wonder of theatre at Nottingham Playhouse in an environment that is comfortable and supportive. The house lights will be partially up throughout and ‘chill-out’ areas will be available before, during and after a performance. If a familiarisation visit would be helpful, we would be very happy to accommodate this.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding familiarisation visits, wheelchair access and disabled parking, all you need to do is email

Private Peaceful

The Peaceful brothers, Tommo and Charlie, have a tough rural childhood where they must overcome the death of their father, financial hardship and a cruel landlord. Their fierce loyalty to each other pulls them through, until one day they both fall for the same girl. And then the Great War comes.

We join 18 year old Private “Tommo” Peaceful in the trenches as he tells us his remarkable story on what may be his last night on earth. A tale of courage, devotion and sibling rivalry.

This professional premiere of Simon Reade’s new version for an ensemble of actors brings to life the moving, vivid and relatable story of “Tommo”, a country lad fighting a war he doesn’t understand for people he cannot respect.

Acknowledged by multi-award winning author Michael Morpurgo as his favourite work, Private Peaceful has quickly become a classic story for children and young adults since publication in 2003.

Private Peaceful was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, won the Red House Children’s Book Award, won the Blue Peter Book Award and was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Best Book of the Last 10 Years Award.
