Simon Merrells nominated for The Stage Award

Oedipus, our co-production with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, continues to be a roaring success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. As well as receiving fantastic reviews we’re delighted to announce that Simon Merrells, who plays the title role, has been nominated for Best Actor in The Stage Awards.

The show premiered in Nottingham earlier this year to critical and audience acclaim with its highly charged performance style and charismatic ensemble of actors. Written and directed by Steven Berkoff the show runs at the Pleasance Grand until 29 August.

It is a great achievement for the cast and crew and we wish Simon lots of luck!

Here’s what some of the reviewers had to say;

“As you would expect from a Berkoff-written and directed drama, the production is slick, well-scripted and beautifully choreographed.”
The Stage Edinburgh

“Steven Berkoff’s utterly distinctive new version of the Sophocles tragedy is like a well-oiled machine grinding towards death and destruction.”
The Independent

“The bravest, most exciting and moving Greek tragedy in years”
Sunday Times

“Above this ensemble rises Simon Merrells as a truly magnificent Oedipus.”

“Nobody is quite like Steven Berkoff. His work is instantly recognisable and this modern version of Sophocles’ tragedy bears all of the hallmarks.”
