LIT – a play by East Midlands writer Sophie Ellerby (THREE, Arcola) – is set to showcase some of the area’s newest talent.
“If I’m so special… then why does everybody leave?”
LIT explores the turbulent teenage years of a Nottingham girl looking for love in all the wrong places. It places complex, working-class people at the heart of the production, and was inspired by Sophie’s experience working with young women and mothers in the prison system.
Sophie Ellerby said: “I created LIT as a state of the nation piece, but told through the eyes of a young girl. I believe that Bex is a strong female voice that will prompt other women to reflect on their own experiences. I can’t wait to see it brought to life and toured around the country.”
Stef Driscoll, Director of LIT, added: “I’m really excited to be directing LIT. It’s a play for the Netflix generation who want a narrative that is thrilling, witty, and packs an emotional punch. Audiences will be taken on a journey with Bex that unmasks what it means to be a young woman today.”
A new trailer for the play has also been released, featuring rising star Eve Austin who will take the lead role of Bex. Eve’ is a Nottinghamshire actress, whose recent credits include The Athena for Sky and The ABC Murders alongside John Malkovich for the BBC and Amazon Prime.
She will be joined by Josh Barrow (The Outsider, The Print Room and Vera, ITV) as Dillon and Tiger Cohen-Towell (Primadonna _and _Crabs, Television Workshop Nottingham) as Ruth. Maxine Finch (Coronation Street and Hollyoaks) will play Sylvia, while Kieran Hardcastle (My Mad Fat Diary, E4 and This is England) plays Lee. Jim Pope (Hearing Things, Omnibus Theatre Clapham and Kes, CAST) will appear as Mark.
LIT was originally commissioned by funding from the Arts Council through HighTide’s First Commissions Scheme. It will be performed in our Neville Studio between Tuesday 24 September – Saturday 5 October 2019, after a run at both HighTide Festival Aldeburgh 2019 (10-14 September) and Clapham Omnibus (17-21 September). Tickets are on sale now.
